Okay, here we go. This is what we’ve all been waiting for, right? I’ll admit I only gave this 4-track EP a cursory listen when it first came out, and didn’t truly get into its beauty until Pop 2 was released. What a waste of a year! Vroom Vroom is the gateway into Charli’s most bonkers and off-the-walls work, with thanks to the good folks over at PC Music. If True Romance had hints of industrial, electrical sounds, then Vroom Vroom takes it up to eleven, and to glorious effect. The warped vocals and repetitive, speedy lyrics may be an acquired taste for some, but once you get into them, it’s like nirvana. This sound is the logical successor to Cher’s autotune: throwing every bit of the computer into the recording studio and just going crazy. Trophy – a remix was recently used in the trailer for Ryan Murphy’s “The Politician”, by the way – is an overachiever’s wet dream, hammering in desire over and over again: “I want that trophy. I want that trophy. I want that trophy…” And that’s the beauty of this EP, it takes very concrete scenarios and distorts, glitches, and upgrades them into something crazy wonderful.
