What’s that? A concept album from Allie X that involves LA, nuns, and the apocalypse? Sign. Me. Up. Super Sunset is a marvel: a seven-track set that covers everything from the despair of the everyday Los Angelean, record label woes, falling in love, something about science (?), and more. When Focus was first released at the beginning of the album cycle, I was admittedly underwhelmed, clearly not picking up on the beauty in the lyrics: “When the clouds turn purple and the rain comes through / And I watch the sunset split in two / And there’s fiery skies but in your eyes they’re blue”. It’s pure poetry. But, when the album finally dropped and I got to experience the full journey that had been provided, it all clicked into place. It left me speechless.
*I cut the instrumental Intro and Interlude, but I don’t consider those to mean anything significant to the album’s order or score.
